EVENT

2009 Regional School Crossing Guard Training Workshop #1
Date: 07/30/2009 @ 9:00 am

MAG invites school crossing guards and interested school officials that serve in K-8 schools in the Phoenix metropolitan region to attend either of two half-day Regional School Crossing Guard Training Workshops that will be held at the beginning of school year in 2009. The first workshop will be held on July 30, 2009 in Peoria, and the second will be held on August 6, 2009 in Mesa. These workshops are organized and held in support of a stated regional safety goal to improve road safety on access routes to elementary and middle schools. The workshop content has been developed in partnership with a number of cities in the Phoenix metropolitan region. There is no cost to attend either workshop.

We recognize the crucial role played by K-8 schools in ensuring safe access to schools, particularly for younger students. As the regional planning agency for the Phoenix metropolitan region, we are working on this issue with all the cities and towns in this region, and have initiated some steps to improve safe access to schools. However, the support of School Districts is essential to address this issue effectively. Providing education and training to all school crossing guards in the region is a basic, but an essential step to ensure that crossing guards do not compromise their own safety or that of children while performing their duties. Improving Safety on Access Routes to Schools, is identified as a regional safety goal in the MAG Strategic Transportation Safety Plan. The U.S. Department of Transportation recognizes this as a national transportation safety issue, leading to the establishment of both national and state Safe Routes to School Programs.

Both workshops will have identical content and are based on similar workshops conducted by the City of Phoenix for over 40 years. All partnering cities strongly recommend this workshop for all K-8 schools within their city limits. Please note that the City of Phoenix will not be holding a separate training event this year.

The workshops will also feature Spanish translation for those who need it. For event planning purposes we would like to request that interested schools, organizations and individuals register for the workshops also indicating the number of attendees requiring translation services. Please use the registration form posted under Resources below and have it faxed to reach us by July 17. 2009. You may also mail the form to us OR download it from our website and submit via email.

If you have any questions please contact our event coordinator, Kiran Guntupalli at (602) 254-6300. Thank you.
