In September 2005, about one in every 13 households in Maricopa County received a 2005 Census Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau that they were asked to fill out and return. The U.S. Census Bureau conducted the 2005 Census Survey through the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) at the request of the Valley’s cities and towns, which need updated population information in order to receive appropriate state funding. The results will update the 2000 Census numbers for cities and towns in Maricopa County.
The data collection and all field work for the 2005 Census Survey is now complete and the local census office is closed. The Census Bureau is now in the data capture and processing phase and results will be received in Spring 2006. These results will be used to distribute billions of dollars in state-shared revenues to cities and towns, Maricopa County, and Indian communities within the MAG region from 2006 to 2011.
The 2005 Census Survey results from the U.S. Census Bureau will provide estimates for September 1, 2005 for Maricopa County, designated jurisdictions, jurisdiction sub-areas, and balance of county. The estimates are:
- Total resident population
- Total resident population living in housing units
- Total resident population not living in housing units (people that live in group quarters and who are “homeless”)
- Total housing units
- Total occupied housing units
