1999 Annual Desert Peaks Awards

PHOENIX (March 22, 1999) — Time is running out for those wanting to nominate an individual or group for the Maricopa Association of Governments' (MAG) Desert Peaks Awards. The deadline for submitting nominations for the Awards, which recognize excellence in regional cooperation, is March 31, 1999.

The Desert Peaks Awards are intended to recognize MAG member agencies, groups, projects and/or individuals committed to promoting, recognizing, demonstrating and attaining the ideals of regionalism.

The awards to be presented are:

• Regional Excellence. This award is for the single individual who has demonstrated commitment to regionalism. Individual nominations may be made of any elected or appointed public official or any private sector individual who works and lives in Maricopa County.
• Regional Partnership. Awarded to two or more member agencies that have demonstrated commitment to regionalism through cooperative efforts. Nominations must be comprised of Maricopa Association of Governments member agencies.
• Public-Private Partnership. Awarded to group or project that has demonstrated a commitment to regionalism through a public-private partnership. Nominations must include at least one MAG member agency.
• Public Partnership. Awarded to the group or project that has demonstrated a commitment to regionalism through public sector or public/non-profit partnership. Nominations should include at least one MAG member agency.
• Distinguished Service Award(s). For the individual(s) who has contributed significant time and effort to regionalism through program or committee involvement.

Entries will be judged on a variety of factors, including the success the project, partnership or individual has had in attaining the goals brought about by a commitment to regionalism.

The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) is a regional organization that develops policies and makes decisions in areas such as transportation, air quality, water quality, solid waste and human services. MAG is made up of Valley communities working together to ensure a better quality of life for nearly three million residents in the Maricopa region. The region encompasses metropolitan Phoenix and includes the many cities, towns and Indian communities within Maricopa County. Governed by a Regional Council that includes 24 city mayors and other lead elected officials, MAG is the forum for ensuring an effective allocation of regional resources.

The second annual Desert Peaks Awards evening will be held in conjunction with the Regional Council Annual Meeting on June 23, 1999.
