MAG Develops Tentative Transportation Program

PHOENIX, November 16, 1998 — On Wednesday, the Maricopa Association of Governments will present a first look at transportation projects which potentially could be built with additional funding provided by the new Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) and other available state revenue.

The presentation will take place during the MAG Management Committee meeting November 18th at 12:00 p.m. in the MAG Saguaro Room, 302 N. 1st Avenue, Phoenix.

Under TEA-21, the state of Arizona will receive a 57-percent increase in federal transportation funding. Although estimates of funds which will be available to this region are pending, MAG has begun developing a list of projects which could be included in the FY 2000-2004 MAG Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

In addition, MAG has outlined further projects which could be funded through the year 2014, based on potential funding. Proposed uses for the increased revenue include accelerating construction of the regional freeway system. Under an accelerated schedule, currently- programmed freeway projects could be completed by the year 2007 — seven years earlier than planned.
